you’re going to be a big sister

hello world,

we didn’t hide any conversations from V when talking about my pregnancy at home, but we waited to explicitly tell her about what being pregnant means. earlier this week, V and i were having a really nice morning together and the moment seemed to arrive. our conversation went something like this:

me: you’re going to be a big sister soon. do you know what that means?

V: no

me: there’s going to be another baby. see how my tummy is getting bigger? there’s a special place where babies grow in there and that’s where the baby is.

V: no, i don’t want another baby.

me: it’s ok. there’s lots of time before the baby comes. pop and i will go get it from the hospital, but not for a while.

V: oh, ok. can i see the baby?

it was a pretty silly conversation, but i think she remembered it because last night as she elbowed me in the stomach while climbing into my lap, she asked to see the baby again. i think we told her the right way for her. she has enough time to consider it on her own and there’s no pressure from us to be excited. i just wanted to make sure she wasn’t surprised by a stranger asking if she’s excited to be a big sister. i don’t care if she’s excited or not. i do care that she’s not blind-sided by new information that people assume she knows.

proud of my big girl,

Strangers, and people in general, can be very assuming. Sounds like you did the right thing. Someone would have “outed” you at some point, it’s best if your child hears it from you first.
